About Us
Afterthoughts Video employees have been working with video since the early 70’s.
At that time, it was a medium that was basically an extension in the use of space age, Mylar, magnetic data tape.  It was 2” wide and initially provided only a Black and White video. It was played on commercial reel to reel machines that weighed around 100 lbs. It was never actually intended to be a long term storage medium but as a time shifting medium.  TV stations could use the tape for taping commercials, news and later, even regular programming for a later broadcast.  This time shifting ability of video tape caused a public cry for the same ability.  Record a program that was broadcast and play it back later.
The movie industry was able to capitalize on the new format by recording previously released movies on video tape that could then be watched in the privacy of a person’s home and at a time of their choosing.
When the first consumer units and tapes became available in the late 70’s, we were there. We witnessed the format battles between competing formats (Beta and VHS) and worked with the newer ¾” commercial formats, on linear editing systems.  The costs of commercial editing equipment, was prohibitive for consumer use.  It was actually cheaper to film and edit on film.  The final product could then be transferred optically to video tape. In the mid 80’s “Pro-summer” equipment finally emerged  in a price range that would allow the Videographer to emerge.
Larger businesses were the first to utilize the new format on an everyday basis and generally in the form of short training programs (talking heads), or for video taping an important corporate speech that could then be played for other working shifts that were unable to attend the original speech.  The video technicians that came from these corporate breeding grounds were commonly the first to see merit in using the medium in weddings. This was the path that the owners of Afterthoughts Video, inc. took.  Video productions on a home editing unit as a hobby turned into a very successful video editing business.
Of course, time has marched on and the present world now incorporates a myriad  of digital formats, each competing for their own niche or piece of emerging markets.
We are constantly watching the continuing battles go on over formats and equipment.  One only has to go onto the internet to experience how many different video players you must download just to play everyday internet videos.  Of course, you must know first what type of computer you are even using to access the internet. They use different operating systems.
The former battle of Beta vs VHS has expanded to CD-R, CD+R, CD-RW, CD+RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, ROM, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, Mpeg-3, Mpeg-4, DV, MOV, WMV, Flash, H-264,  Quicktime, AVI, etc.

Afterthoughts Video is still here and is actually totally already set up with it’s cameras and production equipment to capture, edit and produce High Definition projects.  We are just waiting for a winner in the
High Definition battle that is going on for the dominant High Definition player to emerge.  Until then, we still live in the DVD dominated world where we excel against our competitors.
At the end, your primary memento of the wedding is the “still photos” and the recorded footage.  After a few days the photos seem to drift away into albums or shoe boxes to serve out their remaining lives.  Color photos, even the best, start to suffer from fading and a changing of color from the dyes used to print them.
The shoe box storage might as well be the photos coffin for they will seldom be brought out again.  When they are, for a special occasion, they seem not only to have changed in color and contrast but have picked up scratches and perhaps some flaking.  They are beginning to need repair.
The DVD’s, if properly handled and stored, should last for a estimated 99 years or more without losing any quality, because of the digital format. This is far longer than most of us really care about.  The good news is that a DVD is edited as entertainment with menus where one button can show a slide show of the major still photos taken throughout the event.  When it is set to music, you have a production that you will repeatedly watched without objection. It condenses time, provides entertainment and is easy to keep available to review, on a moments notice.
As a digital product, it can be transferred easily to a new format that may come up in the future.  It is our opinion that even the still photos should be placed upon a Photo CD.  It takes up no space compared to a print, can be placed upon a computer for easy access, and a print from it 10 years from now will look as good as if it were just taken.  In addition to the video footage used in our DVDs, we generally incorporate quite a number of still photos into the production as a part of our style.  They are presented as true entertainment with the use of the latest
professional editing software from Apple.  This includes other graphics programs such as Motion, DVD Studio Pro, Soundtrack Pro, Boris FX, Boris Graffiti and more!
Afterthoughts Video, by using the latest equipment and programs, has become an excellent training ground for many of our associates who have gone on to specialize in the movie and TV industry or even start their own businesses.   This atmosphere allows us to actually take more than one project at a time and many times we are able to respond to clients with a short lead time.
